Alex was one of two guys in our group who had real mountaineering experience. "Summiting" Whitney by walking up a well-maintained trail wasn't that big a deal compared to his having summitted Mt. Rainier with an ice axe and crampons. The rest of us were tenderfoots, not as confident we would do well on the hike.
